Ermita de la Virgen. Patrimonio de la Humanidad
Facts and practical information
The church of Santa María or also known as Church of La Virgen de Tobed is a church whose typology was defined by professor Gonzalo M. Borrás Gualis as a Catholic church-fortress in the Mudejar style located in the municipality of Tobed, built between 1356 and 1405-1410.
It was declared, along with 6 other Aragonese monuments, especially outstanding among the group of Mudejar style monuments considered World Heritage by Unesco in 2001.
Promoted by the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Calatayud, it is the prototype of a church-fortress, a unique concept in Spain at the time. Externally it is designed for defence, with a perimeter gallery and a defensive parapet.
The Order of the Holy Sepulchre decided to build it during the war between Peter IV of Aragon the Ceremonious and Peter I of Castile the Cruel. It served as a church and as a defence near the border with Castile.
For the high altar of the church the painter Jaume Serra made an altarpiece currently preserved in the Prado Museum.
