Poblat de naviformes de Son Mercer de Baix, Menorca
Facts and practical information
The settlement of Son Mercer de Baix is an Asset of Cultural Interest located in the upper part of the eastern side of the Barranc d'En Fideu ravine. It is not a settlement from the Talayotic period, but corresponds to the previous phase, known as the Pre-Talayotic or Naviform period, which dates from the Bronze Age. Although the settlement was abandoned at an undetermined time and no Talayotic remains can be found, some later structures can be seen, specifically from the Roman period. This is evidence of a second occupation, although more punctual than the first, as these remains are not very abundant. The dwellings typical of the pre-Talayotic or Naviform period are the structures known as Naveta de habitación. These are characterized by their elongated plan, without internal compartments. They should not be confused with funerary navetas such as the Naveta des Tudons, which had a completely different function. In the village of Son Mercer de Baix there are several navetas, but the best preserved is the one known as "sa Cova des Moro", the first one at the entrance to the village.
