Plaza Veinticinco de Julio, Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Facts and practical information
The Plaza de 25 de Julio in Santa Cruz de Tenerife owes its name to July 25, 1797, the date on which the city repulsed Admiral Nelson's attack when he attempted to occupy the island. However, it is popularly known as Plaza de los patos.
Located in the vicinity of García Sanabria Park, it is in the centre of Veinticinco de Julio Avenue and Viera y Clavijo Street, where General O'Donell and Costa y Grijalba Streets also converge.
It was built between 1913 and 1917, and its central fountain is identical to the Fountain of the Frogs in the Maria Luisa Park in Seville. In total, the square has an approximate area of 1,330 square meters.
The fountain features the figures of eight frogs surrounding the central goose.
The most outstanding feature of the square, apart from the central fountain, are the 20 benches with painted ceramic advertisements from Triana from those who sponsored its construction.
Around the square are the Post Office building, the Martí Dehesa mansion and the current Church of San Jorge, formerly an Anglican church, whose construction was completed in 1897. This church has a Latin cross plan, and has a nave and diaphragm arches in wood.
