Torre de Mogrovejo
Facts and practical information
The tower of Mogrovejo is a stately complex in the village of Mogrovejo, in the municipality of Camaleño, located on a half-slope of the Picos de Europa, dominating the village. It is protected by the Royal Decree of 22nd April 1949 and was declared a historical site in 1985. It was built at the end of the 13th century by the Lords of Mogrovejo, who were already a distinguished family in 1248, when King Sancho granted them the monastery of San Martín de Mogrovejo. An example of their power is that they could handpick the mayors of all the villages in the valley of Valdebaró. At the end of the 14th century, the Mogrovejo family became related to the Lasso de la Vega, a powerful family located in what is now Torrelavega. Due to another union, celebrated in the 18th century, the possession of the tower fell to the Álvarez de Miranda family from Benllera, who still keep it.
From the tower of Mogrovejo comes the funerary monument of the Counts of Mogrovejo, nowadays property of the National Museum of Sculpture in Valladolid.
