Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, Soria
Facts and practical information
Located in the urban centre of Soria, outside the walls of the old medieval city, the hermitage of La Soledad stands in the lower part of the Alameda de Cervantes, next to the Espolón promenade, which it borders to the north. In a privileged natural enclave of more than nine hectares, the Alameda opens up like a veritable orchard in the heart of the city. Accessing the park, through its main entrance from the Plaza de Mariano Granados, through either of its twin gates, the hermitage of La Soledad opens onto its own promenade between centenary trees and the green mantle that covers most of the enclosure.
A small hermitage, almost minuscule, with the village flavour of so many hermitages of Castilla la Vieja erected for the memory of a faith. Today it is called de la Soledad de la Virgen, having a tradition of Humilladero in its origins, and from this comes the name of the 16th century Ivorian Christ inside, of great size, attributed to Juan de Juni or a person close to him. Almost the entire construction of the hermitage dates back to the 16th century, being the promoters of its construction the powerful family of the Counts of Gómara at that time, when they were only Lords of Almenar, a town in Soria where they had their castle, which is currently one of the best preserved in the province of Soria. The construction of the chapel is contemporary to the construction of the current Palace of the Counts of Gomara in the heart of the city.
