Iglesia de San Bartolomé, San Cristóbal de La Laguna
Facts and practical information
The Church of San Bartolomé de Tejina, located in Tejina, in the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, island of Tenerife is a temple of three naves separated by arches lowered in stonework on Tuscan pillars of square section, highlighting the robust round arch that separates the main nave from the presbytery, elevated on steps, as well as the main chapel. The coffered ceilings that cover the three naves are of pair and knuckle, without decoration, except in the double braces with light decoration of lacework that reinforce the walls. The three chapels of the chancel have octagonal coffered ceilings with decorative lacework on the corbels.
On the outside, the main façade shows a certain asymmetry with the body of the stone belfry separating the central nave from the Epistle, with a double semicircular arch for bells. The main doorway in stonework rises on a curved staircase, while on the sides there is an oculus, and on the opposite side the volume of the tower, with three bodies, topped by a sharp spire.
The exterior walls of masonry have highlights in ashlars of stonework externally translating the chapels and the corners of the temple, opening several semicircular windows and small windows that are distributed rhythmically in the walls. On the Epistle side a second doorway has a semicircular arch topped by a triangular pediment. The naves have independent roofs of Arabic tile to two waters, while the respective chapels show three skirts and four the greater one, to greater height.
In the church of Saint Bartholomew there is a sculpture of Bartholomew the Apostle probably from the time of the foundation of the hermitage, a polychrome wood carving from the beginning of the 16th century. In this case, the holy apostle is represented with a large knife in his left hand, alluding to the martyrdom inflicted on him by Astiages, king of Armenia and brother of King Polymius whom Saint Bartholomew had converted to Christianity.
