The marsh of Almenara is a protected marsh of Spain that belongs to the Natura 2000 Network. It has 1,550 hectares, which have been included within the SCI. It is also included within the Catálogo de Zonas Húmedas de la Generalidad Valenciana, where it belongs to the group called albuferas y marjales litorales. On 17 November 2017, an area of 1473.9 ha was declared a Ramsar site.
This wetland area is located to the south of the province of Castellón and to the north of the province of Valencia, in the regions of La Plana Baja and Campo de Murviedro. The marshland includes part of the municipalities of Chilches, La Llosa, Almenara, Sagunto, Benavites and Cuartell.
Within the boundaries of the Site you can find a wide variety of habitats, characteristic of the Mediterranean coastal landscape, where you can find the typical mountain habitats with those of the wetlands. Among the habitats present within the Site, we must highlight the following included in the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC: Natural pond with hydrophytic vegetation. Calcareous peat bogs of Cladium mariscus. Mediterranean saline grasslands. Mediterranean salt steppes. Thermo-Mediterranean scrubland. Mediterranean wet meadows.
