Pisoraca, Herrera de Pisuerga
Facts and practical information
Pisoraca is the name of a city, whose ruins are in Herrera de Pisuerga that belonged in pre-Roman times, traditionally associated with the people of the Turmogos and later, after the conquest of Hispania by the Roman Empire, became an important camp for the legions that, under the command of Emperor Augustus, undertook the Cantabrian wars against the Cantabrians and Asturians of the north of the peninsula. In Pisoraca, the powerful Legio IIII Macedonica was stationed between 19 B.C. and 40 A.D. before its departure from Hispania. Since 1993, the archaeological site has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
