San Pedro de la Nave
Facts and practical information
San Pedro de la Nave, nestled in the province of Zamora, Spain, is an exquisite example of Visigothic architecture and one of the country's oldest churches. This ancient sanctuary, originally constructed in the early 7th century, stands as a testament to the skill and artistry of its builders.
Renowned for its intricate stone carvings and remarkable preservation, San Pedro de la Nave was originally located in the village of El Campillo. In the 1930s, it was meticulously dismantled and relocated to its current site to save it from the rising waters of the Esla River due to the construction of the Ricobayo Dam.
The church's design is characterized by horseshoe arches and elaborate decoration, including biblical scenes and geometric patterns, which adorn the capitals and walls. These features are hallmarks of the Visigothic era, making the church an invaluable piece of early medieval art and architecture.
