Església de Sant Pere Apòstol d'Agost, Agost
Facts and practical information
The church of San Pedro Apóstol of Agost was built in the 16th century, although it has later reforms of the 18th century in which the communion chapel and the side doorway are made.
It is a free-standing building with two domes: one that crowns the tower, making a strange effect, and another one perpendicular on a large octagonal drum, above the transept.
It has a central nave of four sections, of considerable dimensions, with lateral chapels separated by little ornamented pilasters, transept and presbytery of regular depth. The dome with drum is placed on pendentives with high reliefs of the evangelists. The decorations on the barrel vault are characteristic: punctual ornaments; baroque, based on vegetal motifs.
The Communion Chapel has a T-shaped floor plan and a dome, with a red marble plinth that runs around the enclosure and walls and ceilings covered with decoration of gilded reliefs and frescoes.
The south façade stands out, with a classical façade dedicated to Saint Peter, with a split pediment and a wrought iron grille.
Curiosities It is worth mentioning an old Agostense legend, which tells that San Pedro came down from the heavens to capture a witch who was tormenting the people of Agost. From this episode, was engraved in a part of the side of the church a face with keys that according to popular myth, is the image of San Pedro, which remained in that part of the church.
