Castillo de Montesa
Facts and practical information
The castle of Montesa, in the province of Valencia, was the seat of the Order of Montesa, and is situated on the summit of the mound overlooking the town, where the ruins of its historic castle are located. It was rated as one of the strongest in the Kingdom of Valencia for its thick walls, strong towers and spacious parade ground, in which it is said that up to 2000 men could be trained. Its architectural style is Valencian Gothic.
Inside the castle were the convent, the church of the Order, the palace of the Master, the barracks, etc. It was the centre and refuge of the dissident Muslims until April 1277 when King Pedro III of Aragon managed to take the castle by assault.
