Banos arabe de Torres- Torres, Algímia d'Alfara
Facts and practical information
The Arab Baths of Torres Torres are located in the square of the Church number 5 in Torres Torres, Valencian Community, Spain. They are next to the town, associated with the Séquia Major de Sagunt that borders the old town centre.
The covered enclosure of the Baths is a rectangular plant that contains three rectangular rooms also covered with vaults, arranged in parallel and in north-south orientation, known with the names of cold, warm and hot. The entrance to the Baths was located in the north. From the vestibule there was an access through a semicircular door to the cold room. The cold room is the most austere of the three. Warm room is the largest and widest one. It is divided into three parts by two semicircular arches made with bricks, which form two lateral alcoves raised one step with respect to the central space. The third room is the hot room and has a surface of about 6.80 x 2.42 m. It is heated by an underground chamber where hot air is injected.
The pavement of the Baths is made of baked bricks arranged in a herringbone pattern. The interior is illuminated by skylights. They have a star-shaped section and a truncated pyramid-shaped base in the vault's soffit.
The archaeological excavation of 2003 has allowed, in addition to offering a more precise dating - 14th century, already in the Christian period -, to document the structures corresponding to the Vestibule or rest room of the baths. The room has a square floor plan, with perimeter walls made of walling with mortar crust.
Typologically, the Baths of Torres Torres respond to the model that is repeated throughout the Arab historical geography: three rooms with a wide central one. The star-shaped skylights in the shape of a pyramid trunk are stylistically representative of Arab architecture. The hydraulic system, based particularly on the supply of the Major Drought of Sagunt, could be complemented by a neighbouring cistern, from which would derive the one that, conceived for the service of the population, still survives.
