Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Castillo
Facts and practical information
The church of Santa María del Castillo is a temple of Catholic worship located in the small Palencia town of Torremormojón, Spain. Until the restoration works of 1986 the building was considered to be a 16th century work with Renaissance plasterwork and other masking. Subsequent studies have shown that the temple was shaped from the second half of the twelfth century through performances of the thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It has three naves divided into six sections, with a five-sided polygonal apse. The slender late Romanesque tower stands out in its structure, reminiscent in appearance of the towers of the church of Santa María La Antigua, in Valladolid, and that of the church of Simancas. The church has interesting chapels with burials of illustrious characters and patrons of the town and a main altarpiece with exceptional sculptures by the artists Juan Ortiz el Viejo I, Juan de Valmaseda, Francisco Giralte and Juan de Cambray.
It was declared a National Historic and Artistic Monument in July 1981.
