Monument to General Espartero, Logroño
Facts and practical information
The monument to General Espartero of Logroño is a large sculptural ensemble of 11,130 kilos of bronze, whose main part is an equestrian statue representing the politician and military Baldomero Espartero, who was regent of Spain with Isabel II as queen. It is located in the Paseo del Príncipe de Vergara or Paseo del Espolón of this city.
General Espartero's wife, Doña María Jacinta Martínez de Sicilia y Santa Cruz, was a native of Logroño, being this the city where they both lived part of their lives and died.
It is located in the center of a circular fountain, on a raised pedestal and surrounded by four lions lying down, also in bronze; two sleeping and others with their heads raised. The whole set rests on a platform as a step in the center of the fountain. On the edge of this platform fourteen words are read in bronze, related to his person: "Peace, Prudence, Loyalty, Temperance, Abnegation, Homeland, Fortitude, Victory, Patriotism, Justice, Law, Heroism, Logroño and Spain". On one of the sides of the base is the inscription "To Espartero" accompanied by a garland, all also in bronze.
