This vibrant piece captures a joyful gathering of the Skagen Painters, a collective of Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish artists who gravitated to Skagen in the late 19th century. The painting skillfully blends elements of French Impressionism and Naturalism while also paying homage to the artistic camaraderie of the Danish Golden Age.

Krøyer embarked on this masterpiece in 1884, inspired by a lively party at fellow artist Michael Ancher's home, along with photographs taken during the event. Interestingly, the project initially caused tension between Krøyer and Ancher, but they eventually reconciled. After four years of meticulous work, the painting was completed and became part of the collection of Swedish art enthusiast Pontus Fürstenberg. Over the years, it has been exhibited in various prestigious venues, including Charlottenborg and the Gothenburg Museum of Art.

The painting features several prominent figures from the art world of that era, such as Martha Møller Johansen, Viggo Johansen, Christian Krohg, Degn Brøndum, Michael Ancher, Oscar Björck, Thorvald Niss, Helene Christensen, Anna Ancher, and Helga Ancher. Its cultural impact has been significant, inspiring creative reinterpretations like a Lego version and a stylized display at ConsenSys in Brooklyn, New York.

Adding to its legacy, the painting has also been part of a European project funded by the European Regional Development Fund, resulting in a three-dimensional digital version for visitors at the Skagens Museum.
