Strängnäs windmill is located on Kvarnkullen in central Strängnäs, northwest of Strängnäs Cathedral. The mill was built in 1855, and is of Dutch type. It has been owned by the municipality of Strängnäs since 1918.
The mill is visible from large parts of the city, and is declared a listed building by the County Administrative Board of Södermanland County, according to which it has a "great cultural and local historical interest." On the slope of Kvarnkullen down towards the town are a number of older wooden buildings that survived the town fire of 1871, including the Grassagården.
