Tykarpsgrottan, Hässleholm
Facts and practical information
Tykarpsgrottan is a former mine for mining ignaberg limestone with a number of labyrinthine passages some ten metres underground, located at Tykarp next to Ignaberga outside Hässleholm. Tykarpsgrottan is about 20 000 m² in size, but only about half of it can be entered. As early as the 12th century, lime was mined in Tykarp. The mine known as Tykarpsgrottan was in operation from the mid-17th century until 1888. Since the 1950s it has been a tourist attraction, but had to close in August 2010 because it lacked an emergency exit. In May 2012, the cave was reopened to tourists after a new tunnel and exit were built.
In Tykarpsgrottan, scenes from the youth thriller Kullamannen, the family film Ronja Rövardotter and the TV series Snapphanar have been filmed, among others. Tykarpsgrottan is also mentioned in Edith Unnerstad's book The Grandmother's Journey.
In addition to Tykarpsgrottan, there are at least four other mines in the nature around Ignaberga. These are in poorer condition, not marked on site and rarely visited by tourists. Mining began in the Kiabacksgruvan in the mid-18th century. The Kiabacksgruvan has an entrance in a brick building with a turf roof. The mine is now walled up a few metres in from the entrance. Next to the entrance there is an oval lime kiln made of cold-bricked, partially sintered stone, which is about 5x6 m in external dimensions, about 1.5 m deep and about 2.5 m in internal diameter.
About a hundred metres from the Kiabacksgruvan there is another entrance to an underground limestone quarry. The mine is not named and the age is unknown but named Ignaberga 20:1 by the Swedish National Heritage Board. The mine is closed with an iron gate a few metres in. As far in as one can see, it appears to be unlined. Next to the road between Ignaberga and Vedhygge there is an entrance to an underground limestone quarry in a ravine. It is completely covered with stone. Name and age are unknown. The site is named Ignaberga 24:1 by the National Heritage Board.
