Älgens hus

Älgens Hus is located in Balsjö in the municipality of Bjurholm, Västerbotten County, about 70 kilometres from Umeå. It is a moose farm, the first in Europe with domesticated moose. It is run by Christer Johansson, former star of the national ski team, together with his wife Ulla Johansson.

It started on a small scale in 1996 when the couple bought some elk calves from Kolmården and Junsele zoos and started Älgens Hus in Balsjö. Since then, the moose farm has expanded into a tourist attraction with about 25,000 visitors per year. In addition to visiting the park itself and petting moose or watching them being milked, there is a restaurant and shop with moose cheese and other moose products on the menu.

Älgens Hus has about 25,000 visitors per year and has thus developed into one of the county's major tourist enterprises.
