Kvilleken
Facts and practical information
Kvilleken, Sweden is home to one of the most remarkable natural wonders in Scandinavia – the Old Tjikko. This ancient tree, a Norway Spruce, stands as a testament to the resilience and longevity of nature, with its roots dating back an astonishing 9,558 years, making it one of the world's oldest known living trees.
Nestled within the scenic landscape of Fulufjället National Park, the Old Tjikko has become a symbol of endurance and has attracted nature enthusiasts and scientists from around the globe. Despite its relatively modest height of about 5 meters, the tree's significance lies in its incredible age and the history it has silently witnessed.
The discovery of Old Tjikko's true age was made by geologist Leif Kullman, who used carbon-14 dating on the tree's root system. The results revealed that while the visible tree is much younger – roughly 600 years old – the root system itself has been continuously alive and regenerating for thousands of years.
Visitors to Kvilleken can embark on a hike to witness this majestic living relic, a journey that not only offers the chance to see Old Tjikko up close but also provides panoramic views of the beautiful Swedish countryside. The tree serves as a poignant reminder of the Earth's age and the fleeting nature of human history in comparison.
