Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Ayutthaya

Wat Phra Si Sanphet, a majestic temple complex, stands as an illustrious remnant of Thailand's former capital, Ayutthaya. This historic site, nestled in the heart of the ancient city, was once a royal temple situated within the grounds of the grand palace. Known for its distinctive row of chedis (stupas), Wat Phra Si Sanphet is an emblem of the Ayutthaya Kingdom's religious architecture and a testament to its bygone splendor.

Constructed in the 14th century, the temple served as a model for Bangkok's famous Wat Phra Kaew. Wat Phra Si Sanphet was exclusively used for royal ceremonies and was devoid of resident monks, unlike other temples of the period. Its significance was such that it housed a 16-meter-high Buddha image, covered in 250 kg of gold, until the Burmese army destroyed it in the 18th century during the sacking of Ayutthaya.

Today, visitors to the site can wander through the extensive ruins, which include the three main chedis that have become iconic. These chedis, restored in the 20th century, contain the ashes of Ayutthayan kings and offer a glimpse into the grandeur of the past. The temple's layout, with its large assembly halls and towering prangs (reliquary towers), reflects the influence of both Hindu and Buddhist cosmologies.

Wat Phra Si Sanphet is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains a focal point for those interested in the history and culture of Thailand. The temple complex is open to the public, and its serene, contemplative atmosphere provides a stark contrast to the bustling markets and modern neighborhoods of present-day Ayutthaya.
