Haouanet de Chaouach, Chaouach
Facts and practical information
Medjez el-Bab The haouanet, plural of the word "hanout" which means "store" in Arabic, are ancient sepulchral chambers dug in the rock. Of approximately cubic shape, from 1.25 to 2.50 meters on each side, with an entrance of almost constant dimension of 1.80 meters by sixty centimeters, they are present essentially in Tunisia as well as in the eastern regions of Algeria.
These burials with one or more funerary chambers sometimes had interior fittings. Probably of Numidian origin, the haouanet were used until the time of the Roman presence in North Africa.
In Tunisia, they are found in several regions, the most important of which are Sidi Mohamed Latrech and Djebel El Mangoub in the vicinity of Bir Bouregba, El Harouri in the vicinity of Kélibia, Chaouach near Medjezel-Bab and the island of El Ouestania off Monastir.
