Rumeli Feneri
Facts and practical information
Rumeli Feneri, a sentinel at the edge of the Black Sea, is a historic lighthouse that stands as a beacon for both the past and present in Turkey. Positioned at the northernmost point of the Bosphorus Strait, this lighthouse has guided seafarers since the 19th century and remains an active aid to navigation.
Constructed in 1856 during the Ottoman Empire, Rumeli Feneri is situated on the European side of the Bosphorus, near the village of the same name. The lighthouse towers at a height of 30 meters, casting its light far over the tumultuous waters where the Bosphorus meets the Black Sea. It is one of the tallest lighthouses in Turkey and is often paired with its counterpart, Anadolu Feneri, which is located on the Asian side of the strait.
As a historical monument, Rumeli Feneri not only serves a practical purpose for maritime safety but also stands as a testament to the region's rich maritime history. The lighthouse is built on the site of ancient Greek and Byzantine fortifications, indicating the long-standing significance of this strategic location for controlling naval traffic entering and leaving the Black Sea.
Today, Rumeli Feneri attracts visitors who are drawn to its picturesque setting, the surrounding rugged coastline, and the panoramic views it offers. While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, it continues to be an iconic landmark, with its white cylindrical tower and red lantern roof providing an idyllic backdrop for photographs.
