Lake Meke

Lake Meke, an extraordinary natural wonder tucked away in Turkey, is a volcanic crater lake that captivates visitors with its striking beauty. Formed more than five millennia ago by a volcanic eruption, Lake Meke is often referred to as a "sunken volcano." This stunning geological formation is located near the town of Karapınar in Konya Province.

The lake is renowned for its unique, dual-layered structure. The upper layer consists of a shallow body of water with an island in the center, which itself is a volcanic cone known as a maar. The lower layer, composed of water with a higher salinity, lies beneath the surface. These contrasting layers are due to the different densities and temperatures of the water, which prevent them from mixing.

Lake Meke's peculiar appearance has led to it being dubbed the "evil eye lake" by locals, referencing the concentric rings of the maar that resemble an eye. The site has also been designated as a first-degree natural protected area due to its unique biodiversity and geological significance.

Unfortunately, the lake is under threat from environmental changes and human activities, resulting in a dramatic decrease in water levels. Conservation efforts are underway to preserve this natural marvel for future generations.
