Facts and practical information
The monument "Glory to the miners' work" is located in the Kiyivsky district of Donetsk in the center of Shakhtarskaya Square. Geographic coordinates: 48°02′14″N. 37 ° 46′55″ w. Established in 1967.
The authors of the monument are sculptor Kostyantin Rakityansky and architect Pavlo Wigderhaus.
The monument is a sculpture of a full-length miner, who holds a lump of coal in his right hand. The sculpture is made of chlorine. Sculpture weight 22 tons. The lump of coal, which the miner holds in his hand, made of aluminum, its weight is 90 kilograms. The sculpture was made in the liver shop of Donetsk regional plant "Remkomunelektrotrans". The sculpture was made by the sculptor Boris Gorb, who participated in its creation.
The sculpture of the miner was first made as a statuette as a present to Mikita Khrushchov. At the Precision Machine Building Plant a bronze statuette and two cupola statuettes were made. However, the gift was not made and the statuettes were left with the Secretary of the City Council Shulgin and the head of the Public Administration Volodymyr Degtyaryov. Degtyaryov initiated the creation of the monument on the basis of this sculpture.
At first, the hand that holds the coal was pulled forward. This is how it was made on the statuette, which was being prepared for a gift. When the memorial was being created, Rakitiansky, at the request of the sculptor Kostin, made the statue with its arm turned to the right side.
The pedestal is made of labradorite and is polished with bouchardy for the imitation of the brilliants of coal. The top of the pedestal is faced with granite slabs. Facing with granite was made in the marble shop of Donetsk Regional Plant "Remkomunelektrotrans". The height of the pedestal is four meters.
The monument is located at the entrance to the center of Donetsk from the middle - the traffic flow from the Putilivsky bus station, train station and airport, as well as the Pivnichny bus station, which existed before. Thus, most visitors see the symbol of the main profession of Donetsk and Donbass.
At the beginning the monument stood three meters away from the current location. Also its pedestal was two meters, which is lower than the present one. On the pedestal there was an inscription "We bring warmth and light to people". During the reconstruction of Shakhtarskoe square the monument was moved, and its pedestal was made higher. Also, the miner had a cape on his tires, and the monument was removed when it was relocated.
The monument "Glory to the Miners' Labor" is a "visiting card" of the city. The commemoration was included in the film concert of 1970 with the participation of Tamara Miansarovoya "Sonyachna balada".
The memorial was inscribed on the postage stamp of the USSR 1969 "To the 100th anniversary of Donetsk". The force of the memorial is on Ukraine's postage stamp of 2000 "National Philatelic Exhibition. Donbass - Shakhtarsky Krai".
The memorial is depicted on at least three special redemptions: "125 years of the city of Donetsk", "National Philatelic Exhibition UKRFLLCSP-2000", "Miner's Day".
The memorial was also depicted on at least three stamped and unmarked envelopes of the USSR and Ukraine.
