Dzerzhinsky, Donetsk

The Monument to Dzerzhinsky is a monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky, the organizer of the Black Terror. It is located in Voroshilov district of Donetsk on the square of his name.

In 1927, the City Commission of Stalino renamed Pozhezhny Square and Pozhezhny Avenue into Dzerzhinsky Square and Dzerzhinsky Avenue accordingly.

The memorial is a bronze bust, erected on June 25, 1937, on a pedestal of rose-colored granite plates. The first bust was created in Moscow. Sculptor - Yakovlev. Height of the breast - 1 meter 20 centimeters.

Three granite slabs for the pedestal, weighing from one and a half to three tons. The plates were extracted and processed at one of the Donbass mines and brought to the place of installation in June 1927.

During the German-German war the bust was damaged. In 1945 the bust was restored - it was cleaned of splinters.

In 1961 the memorial got a modern look. The bust of Dzerzhinsky was replaced with another one by sculptor V. Belashov.

At the end of December 2007, unknown persons spilled green apron on the memorial and wrote on the pedestal "Glory to Ukraine! Death to the Enemy! Prior to that, on 24 December 2007, the monuments to Dzerzhinsky and Lenin in Luhansk City were covered in farce.

On the night of June 3 to 4, 2010, unknown persons wrote on the pedestal the inscription "Kat to the People". In 4 days the inscription was cleaned up by the municipal services.
