Franz Andriyovych Grinkevich was commander of the 32nd Guards Tank Brigade, which in November 1943 relieved Donetsk. In one of the fights Grinkevich was mortally wounded and died on November 11, 1943 in Kharkiv village of Zaporizka region. The tankers buried him in the center of Donetsk and on his grave they built a pedestal with the photo of their commander and with their own hands dragged the fighting tank T-34 on which Grinkevich had fought. Franz Grinkevich was decorated with three Orders of the Red Star, the Red Banner and the World War II. The last order was received shortly before his death.
In 1964, a high granite pedestal and marble slabs with the long metal inscription "L'Histoire de la Glory to the Heroes Who Fell in the Fight for the Will and Independence of Our Fatherland" appeared on the tomb. 1941-1945". For some time an old tank was on a new pedestal, but then it was replaced by a more modern tank T-34-85, and the tank of the battle Grinkevich moved in the yard of the Museum of Foreign Affairs, which at that time was located in one building with the Krupskaya Library. In 1972 the tank together with the museum moved to another place and until 2010 stood in front of the Museum of Regional Studies, overlooking the street Cheluskintsi. In 2010 the tank was sent to the military equipment yard to the monument "To Your Valiant Citizens, Donbas". Museum workers made a clean walk on the tank under the theme "Farewell to the Lovely Yanka".
At city celebrations dedicated to the Day of Victory they put cards to Grinkevich's memorial. In Donetsk, an avenue is also named after Grinkevich.
In the same park there is a memorial to another Donbas activist - Lieutenant General Kuzim Akimovich Gurov.
