Swallow's Nest
Facts and practical information
Perched atop the 40-meter high Aurora Cliff, overlooking the Black Sea, Swallow’s Nest is a decorative castle and an emblematic architectural marvel in Crimea, Ukraine. This Neo-Gothic structure, resembling a medieval knight’s castle, was built in 1912 by the Russian architect Leonid Sherwood for the Baltic German oil millionaire Baron von Steingel.
The castle's design is compact and fairy-tale-like, with its pointed turrets and intricate stonework, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Crimea. Despite its relatively small size, Swallow's Nest has become a symbol of the southern coast of Crimea, often featured in postcards and promotional materials.
Swallow's Nest has a dramatic history, having survived several tumultuous events, including the Russian Revolution and the Crimean Earthquake of 1927. Due to the latter, the castle was closed for a long period due to concerns about the stability of the cliff. However, it was later restored and reinforced, ensuring its continued presence on the Crimean landscape.
