Royal Crescent, Bath

The Royal Crescent is a stunning example of Georgian architecture and a must-visit attraction in the historic city of Bath, United Kingdom. This sweeping crescent of 30 terraced houses, laid out in a perfect arc, was designed by the architect John Wood the Younger and built between 1767 and 1774. It is one of the greatest achievements of 18th-century urban design and has become an iconic landmark of Bath.

The Royal Crescent's uniform facade presents a palatial frontage with Ionic columns on a rusticated ground floor, a unifying frieze, and a majestic cornice. Each original house behind this facade, however, is unique, with different internal layouts and features chosen by the original owners. Today, the Royal Crescent is both a residential area and a tourist destination. Number 1 Royal Crescent, a museum maintained by the Bath Preservation Trust, has been restored to its original glory and offers visitors a chance to experience the interior as it might have appeared in the late 18th century. The museum provides an insightful glimpse into the life of the Georgian elite, displaying period furniture, artwork, and decor.
