Animal Wall, Cardiff
Facts and practical information
Just a stone's throw from Cardiff Castle, the Animal Wall is an enchanting historical feature that captures the imagination of both locals and visitors to the capital city of Wales. Erected in 1890, this unique landmark consists of a series of whimsical animal statues that appear to be peering over the wall, giving it a fairytale-like charm.
The wall was designed by the architect William Frame, who was a protégé of the renowned Victorian Gothic revival architect William Burges. Originally, the Animal Wall featured 15 animals, including lions, apes, and a lynx, but it has since been expanded. The sculptures were carved with meticulous attention to detail by Thomas Nicholls, a noted sculptor of the time.
Located along Castle Street, the Animal Wall was part of the 3rd Marquess of Bute's vision for a gothic fantasy landscape surrounding Cardiff Castle. The Marquess was one of the richest men in the world at the time, and his wealth is reflected in the elaborate design and craftsmanship of the wall.
Over the years, the statues have undergone restoration to preserve their character and detail. In addition to the original figures, new animals were added in the 1930s, including a pair of sea lions and a beaver, bringing the total count to 17.
The Animal Wall is not only a delightful sight for those exploring Cardiff but also serves as a historical landmark reflecting the city's Victorian heritage. It is easily accessible to the public and provides a perfect backdrop for photographs. Today, the Animal Wall stands as a testament to Cardiff's rich architectural history and continues to be a beloved feature of the cityscape.
