The "Brown and Black Asteroid" is an eye-catching outdoor sculpture located just outside the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History in Eugene, Oregon. This piece is a replica of the renowned Willamette Meteorite, although its creator remains anonymous.
In 1994, the Smithsonian Institution recognized this distinctive artwork as part of their "Save Outdoor Sculpture!" program. Their survey revealed that the sculpture is made from wire mesh, fiberglass, and resin. It is quite substantial, measuring approximately 6.5 feet in height, 12 feet in length, and 5 feet in width. The sculpture rests on a base constructed from metal pipes, each roughly 2 feet high and 4 inches in diameter.
The Smithsonian categorized the piece as abstract and noted that it was in need of some maintenance during their survey. The University of Oregon is tasked with the preservation and management of this intriguing work.
