Facts About Reds Legends of Crosley Field
The "Reds Legends of Crosley Field" is a remarkable collection of bronze sculptures created by artist Tom Tsuchiya, prominently displayed at the main entrance of Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. These statues commemorate four legendary Cincinnati Reds players from the Crosley Field era: Ted Kluszewski, Ernie Lombardi, Joe Nuxhall, and Frank Robinson. The players were selected through a fan vote organized by the Cincinnati Reds.
The statues were unveiled on different dates, adding to the anticipation. Kluszewski's statue made its debut on Opening Day in 2003, coinciding with the inauguration of the Great American Ball Park. Later that year, fans witnessed the dedication of Nuxhall's and Robinson's statues. Lombardi's statue was subsequently unveiled in June 2004.
These sculptures capture the players in the midst of an imagined baseball game at "Crosley Terrace" a stylized representation of Crosley Field's infield. Nuxhall is depicted pitching to Robinson, who is mid-swing at home plate. Lombardi is crouched behind the plate, ready to catch, while Kluszewski observes the action from the on-deck circle. This imaginative and interactive presentation has charmed critics and fans alike for its unique and engaging approach.
