Spoleto Festival USA

The Spoleto Festival USA, held annually in Charleston, South Carolina, stands as one of America's foremost performing arts festivals. Founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti, it serves as the American counterpart to the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy. Charleston was selected for its charming ambiance, diverse array of theaters, churches, and unique performance spaces.

Spanning 17 days in late spring, the festival presents over 150 performances, including a blend of opera, dance, theater, classical music, and jazz, featuring both established and emerging artists. Despite facing financial challenges and leadership changes, including conflicts between Menotti and the board, the festival has continued to be a vital cultural event.

The mission of Spoleto Festival USA is to deliver high-quality artistic programs while fostering young talent. It also strives to embrace various forms of performing arts and contemporary innovation, providing unique performance opportunities. Notable artists who have graced its stages early in their careers include Renée Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma.

The festival produces its operas and presents an eclectic range of theater, dance, and music programs, from classical to jazz and blues. It has also premiered numerous works by renowned composers. Complementing the main festival, Piccolo Spoleto highlights local and regional artists, adding another layer to the cultural celebration.

A significant feature of the festival is the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra, formed through nationwide auditions. Serving as the resident orchestra, this ensemble collaborates with conductors across various performances. Many alumni have gone on to join professional orchestras in the U.S. and internationally.
