Fern Canyon, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park

Nestled within the verdant embrace of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in the United States, Fern Canyon is a natural wonder that seems to have leapt straight from the pages of a fairytale. Fern Canyon is renowned for its 50-foot high vertical walls, which are adorned with a variety of fern species, including the delicate five-fingered ferns, the sturdy sword ferns, and the ancient chain ferns, among others. The floor of the canyon is crisscrossed by a clear stream, adding a soothing soundtrack to the tranquil environment.

Outside of summer, visitors may need to wade through shallow water to access the canyon, so waterproof footwear is recommended.

Fern Canyon is open year-round, though the best time to visit is from late spring to early fall when the ferns are at their most vibrant and the weather is conducive to hiking. As part of a state park, there is a day-use fee required for vehicle entry. Facilities like restrooms and picnic areas are available near the parking area.
