Nobska Light, Woods Hole
Facts and practical information
Perched on the rocky shoreline at the southern tip of Cape Cod, Nobska Light stands as a beacon of maritime history in the quaint village of Woods Hole, Massachusetts. This iconic lighthouse, with its distinctive white and black structure and a classic red lantern room, has been guiding sailors through the treacherous Vineyard Sound since its establishment in 1828.
Nobska Light is not just a navigational aid but also a beloved landmark that draws visitors from far and wide. Standing at 40 feet tall, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding waters, including Martha's Vineyard and Elizabeth Islands. The lighthouse's fourth-order Fresnel lens, originally installed in 1888, brilliantly projects light 13 nautical miles out to sea, ensuring the safe passage of vessels navigating the busy waters.
Although the lighthouse itself is not open to the public for interior tours, the grounds of Nobska Light are accessible and provide an excellent spot for photography, picnics, and seaside contemplation. The adjacent keeper's house, which has served as home to numerous lighthouse keepers and their families over the years, adds to the charm and historical significance of the site.
The lighthouse is managed by the Friends of Nobska Light, a non-profit organization dedicated to its preservation and the education of its visitors. The group often hosts special events, community gatherings, and educational programs that celebrate the maritime heritage of Woods Hole and the importance of lighthouses.
