Old Point Loma Lighthouse, San Diego
Facts and practical information
Perched on the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula in San Diego, California, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse stands as a beacon of history, guiding not ships, but the curiosity of visitors through time. This storied lighthouse, now a museum, was first lit on November 15, 1855, and served as a navigational aid for mariners entering San Diego Bay until 1891.
Constructed to assist in the safe passage of ships through the treacherous waters off the coast of California, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse is an iconic structure, rising 46 feet above the ground and situated 422 feet above sea level. Its strategic location was chosen for its high elevation, which was initially thought to be beneficial for visibility. However, the lighthouse's lofty perch often placed it above the fog line, rendering its beam ineffective on misty nights.
Despite its operational challenges, the lighthouse remained an essential part of San Diego's maritime history until it was replaced by the New Point Loma Lighthouse, located at a lower elevation. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse then transitioned from guiding light to historical monument and is now preserved within the Cabrillo National Monument, a site commemorating the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay in 1542.
The lighthouse has been meticulously restored to its 1880s appearance, offering visitors a glimpse into the life of a lighthouse keeper and their family during the late 19th century. Its interior is furnished with period-appropriate items, from oil lamps to a cast iron stove, each artifact telling a story of the bygone era.
Visitors to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse are treated to more than just a history lesson; the site also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the San Diego coastline and the Pacific Ocean. Nature trails surrounding the lighthouse invite guests to explore the local flora and fauna, including the chance to witness the spectacular gray whale migration during the winter months.
