Boldt Castle: A Testament to Love and Tragedy in Alexandria Bay

Nestled on the picturesque Heart Island in the Thousand Islands region of Alexandria Bay, New York, Boldt Castle emerges as a monument to both grandeur and heartbreak. The castle's story began with millionaire hotel magnate George C. Boldt, who intended the six-story, 120-room mansion to be a testament to his love for his wife, Louise. Construction commenced in 1900, with the ambition of creating a summer dream home that combined the architectural styles of the Gilded Age with the romantic allure of a Rhineland castle. However, tragedy struck in 1904 when Louise Boldt passed away suddenly. Heartbroken, George halted all construction and never returned to the island, leaving the castle unfinished for over seven decades.

It wasn't until 1977 that the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property and began a restoration process that continues to this day. The castle and its surrounding structures, including the Power House, Alster Tower, and the Hennery, have been partially restored to their intended splendor, allowing visitors to step into a bygone era of opulence and romance.

Touring Boldt Castle provides an immersive experience as guests explore the grand halls, rooms still echoing with the plans of their creation, and a glimpse of what might have been. The castle is accessible by water taxi, tour boat, or private vessel, with the journey across the Saint Lawrence River adding to the enchantment of the visit.
