Fabyan Windmill, Geneva
Facts and practical information
Nestled in the charming city of Geneva, Illinois, the Fabyan Windmill stands as a testament to American ingenuity and Dutch craftsmanship. This historic mill, restored to its original luster, offers a picturesque glimpse into the past for visitors and locals alike.
The Fabyan Windmill, an authentic, working Dutch windmill, dates back to the 1850s. It was originally built by Louis Blackhaus, a German craftsman, but it wasn't until Colonel George Fabyan purchased the mill in the early 20th century that it became a focal point of the area. Fabyan had the mill moved to its current location and fully restored by Dutch craftsmen.
Today, the windmill serves not only as a beautiful landmark amidst the green expanses of the Fabyan Forest Preserve but also as a fascinating educational site. It stands at 68 feet tall, with sails that span 68 feet across, and is one of the best examples of authentic Dutch windmill architecture in the United States. The mill itself is a five-story structure, with an interior that showcases the mechanical components that have been meticulously maintained.
Visitors to the Fabyan Windmill can enjoy guided tours that delve into the history of the mill and the process of grinding grain into flour, just as it was done in the past. These tours are not only informative but also provide a unique opportunity to see the mill in action, as it still operates when wind conditions permit.
The site is open to the public from May through October, with specific hours and tour availability that may vary. It's advised to check with the local park district for the most current information before planning a visit. There is no admission fee, but donations are accepted to help with the maintenance and preservation of the mill.
In addition to exploring the windmill, the surrounding Fabyan Forest Preserve offers a range of activities, including walking trails, picnic areas, and the beautiful Japanese Garden. The windmill itself is a photographer's delight, with its striking silhouette providing a stunning backdrop for photos at any time of day.
