One World Trade Center, New York City
Facts and practical information
One World Trade Center, also known as Freedom Tower, stands as a beacon of resilience and a symbol of the new skyline of New York City. Rising to a symbolic height of 1,776 feet, to honor the year of American independence, it is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the sixth-tallest in the world. Completed in 2014, One World Trade Center occupies the site of the original World Trade Center Twin Towers, which were destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
The tower's design is the work of architect David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and it features a striking, glass-paneled façade that reflects the ever-changing sky. Its square base is an ode to the footprint of the original Twin Towers, and as the building ascends, it forms an octagonal shape that culminates in a square parapet at the crown.
One World Trade Center is not only a commercial hub but also a major tourist attraction. The One World Observatory, located on the 100th, 101st, and 102nd floors, offers breathtaking views of Manhattan and the surrounding areas. Visitors can experience an interactive skyline "concierge" – City Pulse – as well as dining options, which make the observatory not just a viewing platform but a full entertainment experience.
The building also houses the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at its base, which pays tribute to the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks and provides educational resources about the events of that day.
