The Pentagon, Arlington

The Pentagon is an iconic symbol of American military power located in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. This massive administrative building serves as the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, including all three military services – Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Constructed during the early years of World War II, the Pentagon was designed to consolidate the operations of the U.S. military under one roof. The building's unique pentagonal shape, from which it derives its name, spans an impressive 29 acres and encompasses five sides, five floors above ground, two basement levels, and five ring corridors per floor with a total of 17.5 miles of corridors.

Despite being a highly secure military facility, the Pentagon offers guided tours to the public, which provide a unique insight into the operations of the American defense establishment. These tours are highly informative, covering the history of the Pentagon, the armed forces, and a memorial dedicated to the victims of the September 11, 2001, attacks, when a hijacked plane crashed into the building's western side.

Visitors interested in touring the Pentagon must make reservations in advance through the Pentagon Tours website. Security is tight, so be prepared to undergo a thorough screening process. Tourists are advised to bring only minimal personal items, as storage facilities are not available.

For those unable to secure a tour, the Pentagon Memorial, located on the southwest side of the building, is open to the public and does not require advance booking. This outdoor memorial honors the 184 people who lost their lives during the 9/11 attack and is a poignant place for reflection.

While photography of the Pentagon's exterior is allowed from nearby public spaces, cameras and recording devices are strictly prohibited inside the building during tours. The Pentagon is easily accessible by public transportation, with the Pentagon Metro station nearby.
