The Museum of Art History, is a didactic municipal museum that exhibits original pieces and replicas. It is located at 18 de julio 1326, West Sector of the Montevideo City Hall Headquarters Building. Visiting hours are from Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 17:30. From December to March it is open during the summer from 13:30 to 19:00. Closed on Mondays and holidays.
In its permanent rooms are exhibited works representative of different cultures and regions, including numerous casts of Egyptian, Greek and Roman art.
On permanent display are plaster casts of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the Discobolus, the Venus de Milo, Nefertiti and outstanding works of universal art, many of them "first copies" taken directly from the originals that are scattered in important museums around the world. Also included are original pieces such as the mummy of the Egyptian priestess "Eso Eris".
Its collection includes sections of prehistory, European art up to the 19th century, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, India, Southeast Asia and Islamic art. It has three ethnographic collections: African art, Mayan-Guatemalan textiles and samurai weapons and armor.
The collection of pre-Columbian art is made up of original pieces and includes a special section on archaeology in Uruguay.
