Samán de Güere

Facts and practical information

Samán de Güere is the name given to a samán tree located on Intercomunal Santiago Mariño Avenue in the homonymous municipality, Venezuela. The tree was declared a national monument in 1933 by the then president of Venezuela Juan Vicente Gómez. Surrounding the tree are elements of Venezuela's Independence, including cannons from the era and rifles from the independence era that surround the tree in a fence style. Currently the tree and its immediate surroundings constitute a natural historical monument for certain events of the past, including having been the point visited by the Liberator Simón Bolívar with his troops in his passage through Aragua. Described by the illustrious botanist Alexander von Humboldt as a tree of about 180 m in circumference at its widest point.

Along with Humboldt, other scientists, historians, poets and artists dedicated segments to the Samán de Güere in their works, including Andrés Bello, Rafael María Baralt, Fernando Bolet and Jacobo Borges. Bello, while in London, wrote a poem entitled Allocution to Poetry in which he compares the Liberator Simón Bolívar to the Samán de Güere.
