Season and weather by month
May - June
May | Jun |
The period from May until November is the rainy season in Vietnam, bringing more cloud cover and heavier rains. The weather during this time can be unpredictable, making travel complicated. Days are hot and the air is humid. Temperatures rise to around 30°C.
May heralds the arrival of the monsoon and is still a relatively good month for hiking in Mu Cang Chai and the Sapa region, but in June it is better not to do so anymore. In central Vietnam (Hoi An, Danang, Hue, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Dalat) and in the south (Ho Chi Minh, Phan Thiet and Mui Ne, Ho Tram and Long Hai, Con Dao and Phu Quoc), in addition to the fleeting rainfall appearing more and more frequently, we can also count on a good dose of sunshine. On the coasts you can beach and enjoy sea bathing. In the Con Dao area, favorable conditions for diving are ongoing, and June brings to the island the beginning of the nesting season of the green turtle, which can be observed on some beaches. The Central Plateau and Dalat regions are wetter, and rainfall occurs more frequently there. The rains come in the form of fleeting but intense downpours, which can make travel in the area much more difficult.

July - August
Jul | Aug |
July and August bring an intensification of the monsoon, with intense downpours occurring with increasing frequency, making both sightseeing and beachcombing difficult.
Mountainous areas (around Hoang Lien Son, Sapa) are characterized by heavy rainfall and violent storms. As a result of local flooding, some trails are closed, making travel in the region difficult.
The weather in the center of the country, on the beaches of Hoi An, Danang and Nha Trang, and in southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh, Phan Thiet and Mui Ne, Ho Tram and Long Hai, Con Dao and Phu Quoc) can be capricious - once sunny and bright, other times overcast and rainy.
Although the weather during this period is not the best, due to the holiday season, a large number of domestic and foreign tourists vacation in Vietnam at that time, making many tourist sites crowded.
September - November
Sep | Oct | Nov |
September and November bring gradual warming across the country. The rainy season slowly ends, it rains less and less, and temperatures drop to 24°C - 28°C.
Gradually, trekking conditions around Sapa and Ha Giang improve. The end of September and the beginning of October is an exceptionally picturesque time of year to visit Mu Cang Chai, as the region's rice fields are ready for harvest and turn golden.
The rainiest region during this period is central Vietnam (Hoi An, Danang, Hue, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Dalat). Days are getting cooler, with air temperatures dropping to 23°C - 28°C. Cloudiness and heavy rainfall accompanied by violent thunderstorms are more frequent. This is not the best weather for both mountain trekking and beachcombing. Some areas may be inaccessible due to flooding including Phong Nha Caves.
In southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh, Phan Thiet and Mui Ne, Ho Tram and Long Hai, Con Dao and Phu Quoc) the monsoon is also still ongoing, only from mid-October onward is the weather gradually improving. The beaches and coasts then become sunnier and more serene.

December - April
Dec | Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr |
Vietnam is best visited between December and April, when the country is in peak tourist season. Most areas feature downright ideal weather for sightseeing and other forms of active recreation. We can count on sunny and warm days and little rainfall.
In central Vietnam (Hoi An, Danang, Hue, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Dalat) and in southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh, Phan Thiet and Mui Ne, Ho Tram and Long Hai, Con Dao and Phu Quoc) temperatures reach 25°C - 30°C. In December, there may still be cloudiness and fleeting rainfall, but from January onward, these regions experience downright ideal weather.
Without worrying about the aura, we can enjoy sea and sun bathing on the beaches of Hoi An, Danang and Nha Trang during this period. Full sun and cloudless skies can also be found in the south of the country, in Phan Thiet and Mui Ne, Ho Tram and Long Hai, where the weather guarantees blissful relaxation on sandy beaches.
The islands of Phu Quoc and Con Dao also enjoy sunshine and high temperatures, and lovers of water sports and diving will find a veritable paradise. Underwater visibility averages 20m-30m, allowing you to admire the underwater world without problems.
The areas of Dalat and the Central Plateau, due to their higher altitude, are a few degrees cooler, but there too you can experience a large dose of sunshine, which creates very good conditions for trekking and hiking.
Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa, Ha Giang, Mu Cang Chai, Ninh Binh and Mai Chau) is slightly colder than the rest of the country, with temperatures oscillating between 15°C and 25°C. Mountainous areas, especially those higher up (Hoang Lien Son area, Sapa) are more cloudy and much colder, the mercury bar can drop below 10°C. This does not deter climbing enthusiasts traversing mountain trails. In coastal areas and near Halong Bay at this time, morning fog is common, with gradual clearing during the day.
