Martyrs' Memorial, Algiers

The Martyrs' Memorial, known locally as Maqam E'chahid, stands as a towering tribute to the heroes who lost their lives during the Algerian War of Independence from France. Dominating the skyline of Algiers, Algeria, this iconic concrete monument was inaugurated in 1982 on the 20th anniversary of Algeria's independence.

Rising to an impressive height of 92 meters, the memorial consists of three stylized palm leaves which shelter the "Eternal Flame" beneath. At the edge of each palm leaf stands a statue representing one of the three stages of Algeria's struggle: the years of colonialism, the revolution, and the post-independence era. Together, they symbolize the unity and resilience of the Algerian people.

The monument is strategically situated on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, providing visitors with breathtaking views of the capital and the bay of Algiers.
