Basílica de Santo Domingo, Córdoba

The Basilica of Santo Domingo is a Catholic temple located in the central streets of Deán Funes and Vélez Sársfield, in the city of Córdoba, is one of the most important temples in the country. It was witness of fundamental facts, since the birth of the nation. Nowadays, it keeps part of the historical, cultural and architectural heritage of the country.

This temple is under the custody of the Dominicans, with 400 years of permanence in the province of Cordoba. Its present structure dates from the constructions carried out between 1857 and 1861, and it is the third one to be built on the same land, since the two previous ones were swept away by the waters of the La Cañada stream, which periodically flooded the young city, and dated from the XVII century. In its construction, the four towers, whose domes are covered with fine tiles donated by Justo José de Urquiza, who organized the country constitutionally in 1853, clearly stand out. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the temple was painted white, but then it was changed to the shade it has today.

Once inside the building, the Latin cross shape with which it was built stands out. In the central nave there is a silver altar, made in Alto Peru in the XVIII century, and in its domes you can appreciate the paintings of the Evangelists. On the altar you can appreciate the figures of Christ crucified, Saint Dominic and Saint Francis, as well as the coats of arms of the wealthy families that contributed to the construction of the temple. On the altar, the image of the Virgen del Rosario del Milagro, declared patron saint of the Archdiocese of Cordoba in 1937.
