Lake Thetis
Facts and practical information
Nestled in the heart of Western Australia, Lake Thetis stands as a testament to the Earth's ancient history. This saline coastal lake, located near the town of Cervantes, is renowned for its remarkable stromatolites - some of the oldest living fossils on the planet. These unique geological formations are created by microorganisms which are similar to the earliest forms of life that existed on Earth over 3.5 billion years ago.
Lake Thetis is one of only a few places in the world where living marine stromatolites thrive, making it an invaluable site for scientific research and a fascinating destination for eco-tourists. The lake's stromatolites are easily accessible to visitors, who can view these wonders along a boardwalk that encircles a portion of the lake's perimeter.
The lake itself is relatively small and shallow, with a circumference of about 1.5 kilometers, and is named after the Thetis, a ship that surveyed the area in the 1840s. The high salinity levels of the lake, almost twice that of seawater, create the perfect environment for stromatolites to grow, as few other organisms can survive in such conditions, reducing competition and predation.
Lake Thetis is not just a scientific marvel but also a picturesque locale. The tranquil waters and the contrasting colors of the lake's surroundings provide a serene backdrop for photographers and nature enthusiasts. Although remote, the lake's proximity to the Pinnacles Desert, another natural landmark, makes it a worthwhile addition to the itinerary of travelers exploring the region.
