A Brief History of Austria

400 B.C.
Noricum kingdomCelts invade the area and establish a kingdom called Noricum.
15 B.C.
Imperial provinceRomans conquer Noricum and it becomes an imperial province.
1278
The HabsburgsRudolf IV of Habsburg (King Rudolf I of Germany) takes control of the region. The Habsburgs rule for 640 years.
1792–1815
Austrian EmpireAs Napoleon Bonaparte of France wages a series of wars between his country and other European powers, the Habsburg-controlled Holy Roman Empire dissolves and the Austrian Empire emerges.
1867
Austria-HungaryAustria's Emperor Franz Joseph reaches an agreement with Hungary to form Austria-Hungary. Hungary keeps its own government, but Austria's emperor becomes its king.
1914
World War I beginsArchduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne, is assassinated. Austria-Hungary declares war against Serbia and World War I begins.
1918
End of the warThe Habsburg Empire ends. World War I is over. Austria-Hungary is split up.
1920
New constitutionA new constitution creates the Republic of Austria.
1936 - 1938
The AnschlussAustria declares itself a German state. The Anschluss, or union, incorporates Austria into Nazi Germany. Austrians play a central role in World War II (1939–1945).
1945
Occupation of ViennaAt the end of World War II, Soviet troops gain control of Vienna and occupy the area along with British, U.S., and French forces.
1955
IndependenceA treaty grants Austria independence. Occupying forces withdraw from the country, which, in exchange, declares its neutrality.
1995
European UnionAustria enters the European Union.
