The spring months are generally warm with plenty of sunshine. The temperature fluctuates between 15°C and 25°C, slightly cooler in mountainous areas. The weather can be capricious, with cloudy skies, brief rainfall and thunderstorms possible. City sightseeing is possible at any time of the year, however, the spring season has its own charms. There is no heat and the tourist season is not yet fully open, so you can count on a more intimate vacation without a flurry of tourists, especially in Vienna and Salzburg.
The period from May to September is an ideal time for mountain hikers. The Austrian Alps, from the picturesque lakeside resorts of Carinthia and the landscapes of the Tyrol to the verdant Styria, are perfect for hiking. There is a year-round ski season on the Hintertux and Dachstein glaciers.
