Rothschildschloss, Waidhofen an der Ybbs
Facts and practical information
Rothschild Castle or Waidhofen Castle is located in the town of Waidhofen an der Ybbs in southwestern Lower Austria.
The originally medieval castle with a building core from the first half of the 13th century was the seat of the Freising governors for centuries. The most famous owner of the castle was Albert Salomon Anselm von Rothschild, who made it the seat of administration of his extensive estates from 1875. At his instigation, a profound neo-Gothic reconstruction took place with the assistance of the Viennese cathedral architect Friedrich von Schmidt.
Today owned by the city, the building underwent a fundamental renovation until 2007, during which new architectural accents were set by architect Hans Hollein. In 2007, it was the venue for the Lower Austrian Provincial Exhibition, alongside St. Peter in der Au Castle. Today, it houses the "5e-Museum", dedicated to the history of the town, along with various other facilities of the town of Waidhofen.
