Gloriette, Vienna
Facts and practical information
The Gloriette stands as an iconic structure in the historic gardens of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. Erected in 1775 as the last building constructed in the garden, it is a classical example of the Habsburg's architectural extravagance. Perched atop a 60-meter-high hill, the Gloriette offers an unrivaled view of the palace and the city of Vienna.
Designed by architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg, the Gloriette was built to glorify the Habsburg power and the Just War, a war that had been carried out with the aim of peace. The structure, which is the largest of its kind in the world, was used as a dining and festival hall as well as a breakfast room for Emperor Franz Joseph I.
The Gloriette's design is reminiscent of an ancient Roman triumphal arch, with a central section flanked by arcaded wings and a series of columns and statues. The main structure is crowned with a mighty imperial eagle perched on a globe, alluding to the imperial rule of the Habsburgs.
Today, the Gloriette houses a café where visitors can enjoy traditional Viennese pastries and coffee while basking in the historical ambiance. The rooftop terrace is accessible and is a favorite spot for tourists to capture panoramic photographs of the palace gardens and the city skyline.
