The Plainberg is a mountain 549 m above sea level, mostly located in the municipal area of Bergheim, north of the Austrian city of Salzburg. It is part of the flysch zone offshore the Alps in the north and was probably already settled in prehistoric times. This local mountain of Salzburg gained special importance through the pilgrimage church Maria Plain, which is located on its territory and is considered the most important place of pilgrimage in the province of Salzburg. The mountain also serves as a recreational area and excursion destination for the population of the surrounding area. Almost the entire mountain area is a protected landscape area.
